The Greens–European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) group in the European Parliament nominated Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought — one of the European Union’s highest honors, awarded to individuals and organizations who courageously defend human rights, democracy, and freedom of expression.
On 17 October 2024, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) held a secret ballot to select the finalists for the 2024 Sakharov Prize. Following the vote, Dr. Ibadoghlu was chosen as one of the three finalists, in recognition of his peaceful advocacy for democratic reform and as an acknowledgment of the politically motivated nature of his detention in Azerbaijan.
